Vikings whip it up in Woy Woy at MSNSW 2023 State Short Course Championships
Report by Kylie Lane, Club Captain
Over the weekend of 15/16 October 2023, we had 12 tenacious Tuggeranong Vikings who took the trek to Woy Woy to compete in the MSNSW State SC Championships. It was a fun weekend of racing, with many PBs and lots of medals being brought home to Canberra.
Our 12 members who swam their hearts out were: Ann Reid, Kristi Ruus, Caz Makin, Brenda Day, Kylie Lane, Katrina Burgess, Kristine Kennedy, Atsuko McGowan, Liz Needham, Leisl Peters, Donna Campell, and our solo male competitor, Mark van Deursen.
Mark had fun with his harem of ladies, joining in with morning yoga, and even an appearance with ‘Lucy’ the mermaid.
Special mention to Liz winning 5 individual gold, 2 relay gold, and breaking three club records in her age group. It’s always a pleasure to see Brenda, one of our long-standing members, swimming gracefully through the water while also breaking three club records in her age group. Atsuko never fails to show us why she is the breaststroke queen in her age group, also breaking a club record.
We are always noted for having strong relay teams. And both of our women's relay teams did not disappoint. Our women's 200+ and 240+ freestyle relay teams dominated in the water with gold medal finishes and our women’s 160+ and 200+ medley relay teams also won gold.
Warringah Masters won Division 1 with 1391 points, while our tenacious Vikings team finished 6th overall with 603 points. We were just pipped at the finish line for the ‘average points per swimmer’ trophy by Blacktown Masters!
Thanks to Ann and Donna for taking part in their duties as officials, to Mark for taking some happy snaps around the pool deck, to Peter Sharman for volunteering on the medal table, and to those who undertook timekeeping duties for our club.
It was a fun weekend!
